TNO was established by law in 1930 to support companies and governments with innovative, practicable knowledge. As a statutory organisation TNO has an independent position that allows it to give objective, scientifically founded judgements.

TNO is a knowledge organisation for companies, government bodies and public organisations. The daily work of some 5,000 employees is to develop and apply knowledge. TNO provides contract research and specialist consultancy as well as grant licences for patents and specialist software. TNO has five core area’s of expertise:

  • TNO Quality of Life
  • TNO Defence, Security and Safety
  • TNO Science and Industry
  • TNO Built Environment and Geosciences
  • TNO Information and Communication Technology

TNO holds a prominent position in international science and develops new knowledge together with universities and the technology top institutes. TNO also participates in a large number of projects within the European Union’s R&D programme.

The TNO researchers involved in the EFMN project have in-depth knowledge of the interactions between technology, economics, markets, organizational structures, environment, culture and policy, and know how to turn it into useful concepts and strategies. They have ready access to specialized knowledge in most areas of technology and its applications through other TNO researchers and core areas, and have a vast network of relations with similar institutes throughout Europe.
